Posture, Motion and Ergonomics on our features

Can working in a standing position cause health problems?

Standing is a natural human posture and by itself poses no particular health hazard.
However, working in a standing position on a regular basis can cause sore feet, swelling of the legs, varicose veins, general muscular fatigue, low back pain, stiffness in the neck and shoulders, and other health problems.

These are common complaints among sales people, machine operators, assembly-line workers and musicians, whos jobs require prolonged standing.
A person's body is affected by the arrangement of the work area and by the tasks that he or she does while standing.

How can playing in a standing position be a problem?

The layout of the workstation, the tools, and the placement of keys, controls and displays that the player needs to operate or observe will determine, and as rule, limit the body positions that the player can assume while standing. As a result, the player has fewer body positions to choose from, and the positions themselves are more rigid.

These restrictions give the player less freedom to move around and less opportunity to alternate which muscles are used. This lack of flexibility in choosing body positions contributes to health problems.

Right positionWhen translating this to the vibraphone player, it is obvious that the playing height of the bars have to be adjusted to the players' body, and it is obvious to have the bars tilted slightly towards the player for the best possible comfort.

Also, when playing a vibraphone with a smallwidth pedal, specially when playing the higher range, the vibist moves the body more up to the right, and as such has to twist the hips to have the right foot reaching the pedal. To keep balance, most of the body weight is applied to the left leg, and the body is held in an awkward position. This posture is destined to give the vibes player the above mentioned back problems. That is why our instruments are always equipped with a semi-wide pedal and                                                                                                               tilted bars.
